Ajou's President discusses avenues for cooperation with corporate representatives from South Korea during his visit to China 2016-01-26 During his visit to China from January 20th to the 23rd, Ajou University's President Dong Yeon Kim discussed avenues for cooperation between the University and corporations at meetings with members of the World-OKTA Beijing and Shanghai branches, and other South Korean corporate representatives based in Shanghai. The World-OKTA (World Federation of Overseas Korean Traders Associations, hereinafter "OKTA") was established in 1981 as an association of economic and trade activities for Korean businesspeople based in different countries around the globe. It currently has 137 branches in 70 countries. Ajou has been developing a steady partnership with OKTA, including the 'OKTA Internship Program' and the 'Ajou-World OKTA Bridge Project for Corporate Support in Connection with On-site Student Training, which the University began last year. President Kim met with Korean businesspeople from OKTA's Beijing Branch on the 21st, and those from OKTA's Shanghai Branch on the 22nd. The businesspeople in Beijing introduced the business start-up idea contest for Korean and Chinese college students, and said that they would provide full support for Ajou's students to find jobs and start businesses in China. OKTA's Shanghai Branch invited President Kim as a lecturer to the education program for its next generation members, which is scheduled for the coming June. The following meeting with corporate representatives based in Shanghai was attended by ten people, including Director Min Ho Lee from KOTRA (Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency), Director Jae Hong Lee from Export-Import Bank of Korea, Branch Head Tae Sun Kim from Samsung C&T, and Eun Mo Park from CJ, and President Kim and other officials from the University. During the meeting, President Kim introduced programs that Ajou is pursuing, and the representatives from different organizations, including KOTRA, said that they would positively consider participating in the internship program for the University students. Other events during President Kim's stay in China included a luncheon at the invitation of the Republic of Korea Ambassador to China Jang Soo Kim (former Director of the National Security Office) and another luncheon at the invitation of Consul General to Shanghai Seok Hee Han. Ajou signs MOUs with China's Beijing Institute of Technology and Shanghai Jiao Tong University 2016-01-26 Ajou University signed Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) with China's Beijing Institute of Technology and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, respectively. Based on the MOUs, Ajou plans to conduct active exchanges and cooperation between the two universities, including dispatching students and professors to China. Ajou's President Dong Yeon Kim visited Beijing, China, on January 20th to conclude the MOU with the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT). President Kim and BIT's President Hu Hai Yan signed and exchanged the MOU, which deals with avenues for exchange and cooperation in education and research, etc. between the two universities. BIT, which was established in 1940 by the Communist Party of China, is the first university in the field of engineering and natural sciences in the country. Eighteen students from Ajou, including three from other universities, are participating in the "After You Program" at the BIT during this winter. The Program was launched by Ajou for students who find it hard to develop overseas experience because of financial difficulties, and the program for this winter is the second one following the first program that was held last summer at the University of Michigan and Johns Hopkins University in the U.S. and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. During the four-week program, the participants are attending the Chinese language course and having cultural experiences, etc. The MOU with the BIT includes exchanges between students and faculty members, etc. During the MOU signing ceremony, President Kim proposed a dual degree program between the two universities, and the BIT welcomed it. The two sides will soon begin discussions on details for introducing the dual degree program, including the selection of applied departments and exchanging the relevant curricula. President Kim then visited Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) located in Shanghai on the 21st, and concluded two MOUs. Established in 1896, SJTU is a prestigious university, ranking 5th among Chinese universities and 24th among Asian universities in the 2015 QS Worldwide University Rankings. In 2007, Ajou and SJTU signed an MOU on exchange and cooperation, and entered into two additional MOUs to further deepen and expand their bilateral cooperation during the latest visit. Ajou's President Kim and SJTU's Vice President Huang Zhen signed an MOU on the After You Program, and Ajou's Vice President for External Relations Byung Chun So and Director Guk Bong Lee from SJTU's Center for Korean Studies concluded an MOU between Ajou University Unification Institute and SJTU's Institute of Unification, respectively. President Kim's visit to China also included a dinner with the "After You Program" participants and another dinner at the invitation of Ajou's General Alumni Association based in Shanghai. President Kim told the Program participants, "I hope that the 'After You Program' will be an opportunity for you to gain insight on a different region of the globe," encouraging, "I ask you to productively complete it and return home safely." What was interesting about the dinner at the BIT is the fact that its staff members prepared food themselves. In China, it is a sign of special welcome for the host to make and serve food to guests in person. Keysight Technologies donates semi-conductor design software worth 1.6 billion won to Ajou 2016-01-21 Keysight Technologies Korea, which manufactures electronic test and measurement equipment, donated two sets of semi-conductor design automation software to the College of Information Technology at Ajou University. The software is for device-modeling simulation and worth 1.6 billion won. The donation ceremony, which was held on January 18th in Ajou's Yulgok Hall, was attended by CEO Deok Gwon Yoon, Vice President Gang Hyeon Lee, Executive Director Dong Hee Kim, Director Gyeong Ho Kim, and Manager Gwon Il Kim from Keysight Technologies Korea. Also in attendance from the University were President Dong Yeon Kim, Executive Vice President for Industry-Academia Cooperation Kyung Hee Choi, and Professor Sang Bae Kim and Director Chae Woo Lee from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The donation was first proposed by Vice President Lee from Keysight Technologies (entering class of 1975, Ajou's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering) when he learned about semi-conductor education at the University. The device-modeling simulation software (IC-CAP, MBP, and MQA) donated by Keysight Technologies Korea is automation software for engineers who create models of semi-conductor devices. The software will allow Ajou students in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering under the College of Information Technology to experiment with and practice the entire process related to semi-conductor design first-hand. CEO Yoon from Keysight Technologies Korea said, "I hope that our software donation will not only help the University students improve their practical capabilities, but also contribute to the development of semi-conductor design in South Korea," adding, "We will continue to cooperate with Ajou in the future." President Dong Yeon Kim gave his words of appreciation by saying, "The software donated by Keysight Technologies, which is a leader in electronic test and measurement equipment, will definitely enhance the quality of experiments at Ajou's College of Information Technology." Among the donated software, IC-CAP (Integrated Circuit Characterization and Analysis Program) is used in modeling for many types of equipment including high-tech semi-conductor foundries and is for measurement control and parameter extraction. MBP (Model Builder Program) is a one-stop solution that provides both automation and flexibility for semi-conductor device modeling, and it allows for model parameter extraction based on the complex modeling selected by users. MQA (Model Quality Assurance) is a tool for the verification and automation of SPICE models. As a global maker specializing in electronic test and measurement equipment, Keysight Technologies is based in California, U.S., and serves the communications, computer, semi-conductor, aerospace, and defense industries.

Ajou is selected as an operator of the Technology Development Project through Cooperation among Industry, Academia, and Research Institutes2016-01-15Ajou University was selected as an operator of the "2016 Technology Development Project through Cooperation among Industry, Academia, and Research Institutes," which is being carried out by the Small and Medium Business Administration and the Korea Technology and Information Promotion Agency for SMEs.The Project aims to encourage the operators – universities and research institutes – to cooperate with Small and Mid-sized Enterprises (SMEs), which are weak in technological expertise, to transfer their R&D-related technologies and improve the SMEs' technological innovation capabilities by jointly developing technologies.Ajou was selected as a Project operator because of the positive evaluation of the customized R&D infrastructure that it has built to meet corporate demands. The University plans to have its Industry-Academia Cooperation Center for SMEs under the Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation take charge of the Project, with the Technology Transfer Center, the Corporate Support Center, and the Business Incubation Center also participating. By doing so, it intends to establish a system that can create synergy in developing a number of major technologies and fostering technological commercialization via cooperation among industry, academia, and research institutes. In addition, the latest selection will be an opportunity to make sustainable achievements in connection with the LINC Project.This year, the University is set to receive a total of about 800 million won and carry out two assignments under the 'First Step Tasks,' which is the category for companies participating in national R&D projects for the first time, and another six assignments under the 'Take-off Tasks' for those with stagnant technological capabilities regardless of their history in national R&D projects.Director Joong Soon Jang of the Industry-Academia Cooperation Center for SMEs (Professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering) said, "The University's selection for the Project has expanded the foundation for the joint development of innovative technologies and their commercialization, which will help establish win-win relationships with local industries," adding, "We will make great contributions to the growth of the local economy by reinforcing collaboration among industry, academia, and research institutes."

Ajou is selected as an operator of the joint training center for the "Talent Fostering Project Tailored to Provincial and Industrial Needs"2016-01-11Ajou University was selected as an operator of the joint training center for the "Talent Fostering Project Tailored to Provincial and Industrial Needs," which is being carried out by the Ministry of Employment and Labor and the Human Resources Development Service of Korea.The Project aims to raise the employment rate and the performance competitiveness of employees at small- and mid-sized enterprises (SMEs) located in Gyeonggi Province by resolving the mismatch between workforce supply and demand. The University is set to receive up to two billion won per year in operational funds, with the project period set at a maximum 15 years and subject to annual evaluations.The Corporate Support Center under the Ajou University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation, which operates the Program, will be responsible for training a combined total of about 6,600 people in 2016, including 630 people in 21 courses for improving the performance of current SME employees and 100 people in two courses for prospective employees. Director Joong Soon Jang of the Corporate Support Center said, "The Project is a great opportunity for Ajou to prosper and develop along with the local community and industries, and it will contribute greatly to the growth of the provincial economy and job creation by further developing collaboration among industries, academia, and the government."

A student team from Ajou's Department of Mechanical Engineering wins the Grand Prize in the 'Seoul Eco Drive Supporters' program2016-01-06A student team from Ajou University's Department of Mechanical Engineering won the Grand Prize at the activity presentations in the 'College Student Supporters for Smart Eco Drive,' which was hosted by the Seoul Municipal Government.The 'College Student Supporters for Smart Eco Drive' is a program prepared by the Seoul Municipal Government, the Korea Transportation Safety Authority, and Toyota Motor Korea in an effort to promote eco drive technology. It refers to environment-friendly, economical, and safe driving, thereby helping to curb energy consumption and reduce the emissions of carbon dioxide by improving the fuel efficiency of automobiles. Twenty teams of undergraduate and graduate students conducted online and offline activities for the Program for a month from late last October. Ajou's Team ECO20, which consists of four students from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, received the Seoul City Mayor Award, the top prize, with a presentation on their activities. Team ECO20, whose members are Soo Hyeon Cha, Yo Han Ahn, Seong Min Cho, and Yeon Woo Lee, received 3 million won in prize money, along with an opportunity to visit the Toyota Motor Headquarters and the Fuji Speedway Circuit in Japan. The award ceremony was held on December 21st in the Seosomun Building of the Seoul Municipal Government.

Content produced by Ajou's School of Business Administration students is aired on KBSN Channel on December 26th2015-12-23A television program produced by students from Ajou University's School of Business Administration is scheduled to be aired as a year-end special on the sports channel KBSN.KBSN, a leader in Korea's sports broadcasting, decided to air the program entitled "Cleanup Hitter Dae Ho Lee from South Korea" for 30 minutes from 1:20 p.m. on December 26th during the Christmas holiday as a year-end special. The program was produced by Ajou Business News (ABN. Guiding professor: Chun Suk Yoon) under the School of Business Administration based on on-site coverage of Japanese professional baseball.Director Gwan Ho Kim of the Department of Sports at KBSN said, "I believe it is the first time that content produced by university students is broadcast as a regular program on a television channel," adding, "We decided to air the content because its quality is nearly as high as that made by professional broadcasting staff."A team from the Department of Business Administration, including Seung Hyeon Moon, Seo Yeon Moon, Jeong Wook Moon, and Dong Feifei, visited Japan for local coverage during the Chuseok Holiday as a part of the 'First-hand Global Studies' project carried out by the School of Business Administration. The team covered Dae Ho Lee (Softbank Hawks) and Dae Eun Lee (Chiba Lotte Marines), who were playing extremely well in Japan's professional baseball league, and then created a special program with the content in consultation with KBSN.The entire program was created by Ajou's team, except for the narration, which was recorded in the KBSN studio. While the initial version was 45 minutes long, the running time was shortened after the segment on Seung Hwan Oh (Hanshin Tigers), who is under investigation on charges of gambling, was cut in the final editing. Ajou exports its unique program for those willing to enter its undergraduate courses to two Chinese educational institutes2015-12-23Ajou University signed agreements with two Chinese educational institutes on exporting the Ajou Foundation Program (AFP). AFP is a program developed by the University to prepare foreign students to be qualified to enter its undergraduate courses.The University concluded the agreements with the China 271 Education Group on December 14th and with the ChinWin Education Group on the 18th. From the University, Vice President for External Relations Byung Chun So and Director Jeong Yong Yoon from the Office of International Affairs attended the ceremonies.Ajou developed and introduced AFP in the fall semester of 2014 to ensure that incoming foreign students are properly qualified to study at the University. During AFP, foreign students study the necessary subjects for undergraduate courses, including the Korean language, and receive tailored counseling on their academic progress. A total of 18 students who finished the one-year program are currently attending the University, with another 46 students now enrolled in AFP. The nationalities of the program participants are varied, including those from China, Hong Kong, Kazakhstan, and Vietnam.The China 271 Education Group has established and is running 13 middle and high schools in China. The Group, which is drawing attention for its advanced educational system and working to establish universities, plans to operate AFP at local high schools for Chinese students who are interested in studying at Ajou.The ChinWin Education Group is a private educational institution and operates about 100 academic institutes in Zhejiang Province and Jiangsu Province, etc. Under the agreement, the Group plans to introduce the Ajou University's educational program and launch a class of about 50 students by September of next year and expand the classes over time. The Gyeonggi Credit Guarantee Foundation joins hands with Ajou for industry-academia cooperation and donates to the “AFTER YOU” Program2015-12-23Ajou University and the Gyeonggi Credit Guarantee Foundation (GCGF) signed an agreement on enhancing the competitiveness of industry-academia cooperation.The agreement signing ceremony, which was held in Ajou's Yulgok Hall on December 22nd, was attended by about twenty people, including GCGF Chairman Byeong Ki Kim, and President Dong Yeon Kim and Executive Vice President for Industry-Academia Cooperation Kyung Hee Choi from the University.The agreement aims to support local industrial development by promoting economic activities, and to create leading models for industry-academia cooperation. Under the agreement, GCGF will provide Ajou's professors and students who start businesses, the companies within the Business Incubation Center under the University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation, and the University's partner companies with credit guarantee services, counseling on business management, and various forms of financial assistance.The two sides also agreed to foster excellent talents by participating in education to enhance the entrepreneurial mindset and promoting on-site training linked to finding jobs and starting businesses; to conduct joint research in industry-academia cooperation, work together for technological development along with support for commercialization, and promote the relevant achievements; and to seek exchanges between staff members from both sides by forming a council.During the ceremony, GCGF promised to donate 10 million won to the University's “AFTER YOU” Program.

Ajou's Seung Beom Ryu wins top prize in the UN Day English Speech Contest2015-12-22Ajou University's Seung Beom Ryu (Department of Mechanical Engineering, pictured left above) won the Ban Ki-moon Award, the top prize in the college division, at the UN Day English Speech Contest, which was held to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of the UN. The event was hosted by the East and North-East Asia Office of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). Ryu received the award with his speech entitled "The Best Way to Solve a Problem Is To Know What It Really Is."In his speech, Ryu said, "In order to ensure a better future, it is most important to identify and understand the essence of the issues facing the global community with our own eyes, rather than just through books." The final round of the event was held on October 22nd in Songdo, Incheon, with 45 students in attendance. The participants, who passed the preliminary round from September 21st through the 30th, delivered speeches with different titles, including “A Letter to the UN Secretary General,” “Achievements and Limitations of the UN,” and “The UN and Climate Change.”Regarding the award, Ryu said, "I believe that it is more important for young people to find what they really want through a variety of experiences than spending time on studying for unclear purposes," adding, "I want to thank the University for giving me many opportunities and Professor Young Moo Park in the Department of Mechanical Engineering for his continued encouragement."
